Jermaine Jenas hails importance of Tottenham 25-year-old ahead of Man City clash

By Will Butcher

Jermaine Jenas has hailed the importance of Tottenham summer signing Victor Wanyama ahead of Saturday’s showdown against Man City.

The two sides go head-to-head in the Premier League at the Etihad, in a match that could prove crucial at the top of the table.

In his BBC column, Jenas labelled the Kenya captain’s summer move to north London as “massive” after forming a wonderful partnership in the Spurs midfield with Mousa Dembele.

“The addition of Victor Wanyama was massive,” Jenas declared.

“Having Wanyama there means Pochettino can play Eric Dier at centre-half without losing anything in the middle of the park.

“Far from it, in fact, because Wanyama and Dembele have formed the most powerful central midfield partnership in the Premier League.”

Former Celtic ace Wanyama joined Spurs this summer for £16million from Pochettino’s old side Southampton, and has starred at the base of the midfield.

The 25-year-old’s presence in the side remains crucial, as Wanyama’s ability to provide an extra source of cover to his defence has seen Spurs keep 11 clean sheets and 15 wins in his 27 games.

After England international Dier starred in the holding midfield role last season, the England international’s versatility has seen him move into Spurs’ three-man defence this term.

But Jenas claims the signing of Wanyama means Pochettino loses nothing in his midfield.

That “powerful” midfield combination of Wanyama and Dembele is set to be on show once again come Saturday, as Pochettino’s side look to do the double over City.

Spurs blew Pep Guardiola’s side away at White Hart Lane back in October in a 2-0 victory, thanks to an Aleksander Kolarov own goal and a Dele Alli strike.

A win for Spurs could see them move to within four points of league leaders Chelsea, if Antonio Conte’s side lose to Marco Silva’s Hull at Stamford Bridge.
