Jesse Lingard taking major 'risk' as new Nottingham Forest details emerge - pundit
Gabby Agbonlahor has praised Jesse Lingard for taking a “risk” and signing for Nottingham Forest.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker claimed Lingard is “brave” to only sign a one-year deal as he may be forced to take a major pay cut next summer.
Nottingham Forest announced the surprise signing of the 29-year-old last month (21 July).
The Telegraph reported on Wednesday (3 August) that Forest are paying the England international a basic £80,000-a-week.
It is claimed West Ham offered him a £127,000-a-week, two-year deal with a £1million signing-on fee.
“Jesse Lingard would have looked at the situation,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“He thought ‘I deserve this amount of money, West Ham won’t pay me that so I will look at who else wants me, I’ve sat down with Nottingham Forest, I like the way they are looking, the project and the set up. I’ll sign a one-year contract, if I do really well and back myself then I can sign somewhere else in a year’s time’.
“He could have taken the easy way out and signed somewhere else on less money but for three years at West Ham and the package is there.
“He’s taken a little bit more money and backed himself to do well at Nottingham Forest. If he doesn’t do well this season then his wages will go down a lot when he signs a new contract next season.
“It’s very brave from him. Other players and agents would say ‘No, take security, you’re nearly 30, take the three years’.
“I rate Jesse Lingard for doing that and I hope he shuts up his critics and does well.
“It’s the risk you’ve got to take.”
