Joao Pedro: ‘Newcastle and Brighton will negotiate sensibly and reach an agreement’

Newcastle United are in the market for a new striker this summer as they target cover and competition for star man Alexander Isak.

Brighton star Joao Pedro is high on the shortlist at St James’ Park – with the Tyneside club previously in for him before his move to the Amex Stadium.

Football Insider revealed on 10 June that the Seagulls will demand £50-60million for Pedro, 23, this summer.

The Brazil international only joined Brighton from Watford for around £30million in 2023.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested Newcastle have “other targets” ahead of the transfer deadline on 1 September.

Pedro does not fit Newcastle style, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness claimed he doesn’t see Pedro fitting Eddie Howe’s style of play at Newcastle.

Pedro hit 10 goals and notched seven assists in 30 games across all competitions for Brighton in the 2024-25 campaign.

Wyness insisted Brighton and Newcastle will negotiate with respect if there is a move for the ex-Watford star.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Is he the right addition? I’m not sure if he is the right fit for Newcastle, to be honest.

“I think there’s other targets. And so that’s the reason why I’ve got a little bit of doubt about that one. I don’t think he necessarily fits the Eddie Howe style for next season.

“I’ve been wrong before and I’m not the sporting director, but nevertheless that’s my big question mark about that one.

“Here are two clubs I think you will see respect between in the way they negotiate and there won’t be any stupid offers coming in.

“This is example of where you can still be apart, but you can bridge the gap sensibly between both clubs.”

Newcastle get Elanga response from Nottingham Forest

Meanwhile, Football Insider has revealed (15 June) that Nottingham Forest have told Newcastle to increase their offer for Anthony Elanga.

The Magpies have now been told they must make a bid of at least £50million to land the winger.

Sweden international Elanga scored six goals and provided 11 assists as he featured in every Premier League game for Forest in the 2024-25 campaign.
