Joel Matip delivers Liverpool verdict on top four hopes

By Dominic Toner

Liverpool defender Joel Matip is confident that his side can finish inside the top four this season.

The Reds are involved in a tough battle for one of the Champions League spots as they look to return to Europe’s elite competition.

Runaway Premier League leaders are firm favourites to at least finish inside the top four, meaning Liverpool are set to be in a five-way battle for the three remaining spots.

Tottenham, Manchester City and Arsenal are currently inside the top four, but Jurgen Klopp’s side and Manchester United are closely behind.

Matip was asked about Liverpool’s chances of qualify for the Champions League and was confident they can achieve their goal if they show their qualities.

“I think we have the quality to go there and be on a good way,” Matip said, as quoted by the club’s official website. “If we show our quality, I’m positive we will do this.”

Liverpool have not been involved in the Champions League since the 2014/15 season when they crashed out at the group stages, but are desperate to return to the competition.

Klopp’s side were regarded as main contenders for the league title at one stage this season, but poor form since the turn of the New Year has seen them scrapping for a top four spot.

They beat rivals Tottenham 2-0 in their last game at Anfield and will be looking to follow that up when they travel to Leicester on Monday.

The Reds may have a slight advantage over their rivals in the race top four as they only have the Premier League to focus on until the end of the season, compared to every other side balancing league and cup ambitions.
