Joel Matip has praised the qualities of Liverpool team-mate Lucas as the senior player has filled in as a defender this season.
The 30-year-old has been the centre-back in Liverpool’s last two Premier League matches and partnered Matip in the 2-0 victory over Spurs.
Senior defender Dejan Lovren has been absent due to a knee injury and has flown to Germany to see a specialist.
Lucas is a defensive midfielder by trade, but has shown his versatility by playing defence when needed under Jurgen Klopp.
Matip claims that the Brazilian has adjusted seamlessly to the new role and was fantastic against Spurs.
“Lucas has done a very good job. He played brilliantly in the last game against Tottenham,” Matip said, as quoted by the Echo. “I try to help him. Normally, he’s a midfielder but he’s performed like he’s always been a centre-back.”
Lucas is currently the longest-serving player at Anfield and has been with the Merseyside club since 2007.
He has racked up 334 appearances for Liverpool so far and continues to be an important member of the squad this season.
Lucas has already featured 20 times for the Reds this campaign and been used in both defence and midfield.
Klopp will be hoping to have a full squad to choose from for the club’s next game against Leicester on Monday in the Premier League.
In other Liverpool news, Guillem Balague claims that Barcelona have no interest in the club’s man.
