Joel Piroe: Rangers to use 49ers connection to agree summer transfer

Joel Piroe could make a move to Rangers from Leeds thanks to the 49ers’ ownership of both clubs.

That is according to ex-Aberdeen, Aston Villa, and Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who thinks the two clubs will use their connection in the summer transfer window.

Piroe has only started two Premier League games for Leeds this season, and the club could be happy to sanction the sale of the 26-year-old this summer.

Rangers held interest in the striker in the January transfer window but failed in their attempts to bring Piroe to Ibrox.

The futures of Youssef Chermiti and Bojan Miovski are uncertain at Rangers, meaning Danny Rohl could be targeting a new addition up-front.

Rangers have ‘big’ chance of signing Joel Piroe

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes Piroe could join Rangers this summer.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks transfers between Rangers and Leeds could be done “easily” in the future.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Nothing has really happened in terms of the Leeds and Rangers connection yet, but this could be the window where something happens.

“There’s one or two potential players that Rangers and Leeds should be starting to look at, that makes sense and is a benefit to both clubs. Piroe is one that I think could well be a potential to go.

“If it fits both clubs that, Leeds feel they’re oversupplied in that area and Rangers think that they’re undersupplied in that area, then it could be done quite easily, and it should be done quite easily.

“That [Piroe to Rangers] is one that has big potential of working. If not that one, there’ll be something happening this summer in that sort of connection.”

Rangers to end Lawrence Shankland pursuit

Sources have told Football Insider that Rangers will turn their attentions away from Lawrence Shankland this summer as Hearts will not allow their captain to leave the club.

Rangers have held long-term interest in Shankland, but Rohl is likely to sign young players in the transfer market who he can develop.

The Gers want to improve their player trading model, and 30-year-old Shankland does not fit into their plans.
