John Gregory has stated that the problem with Aston Villa ace Jack Grealish is that there are times when “you don’t notice him on the pitch”.
Former Villa manager Gregory compared the current Villa star to the club’s former player Lee Hendrie, who came through the same ranks as Grealish over 20 years ago.
Midfielder Hendrie played for Villa over a 12-year period, making his debut in 1995 as a teenager, just like Grealish did in 2014.
He went on to have a successful career for the club, becoming a firm fan favourite during his 267 appearances for his boyhood team.
Gregory played a big part in his development in the senior team as he feels Grealish should learn and add some of the strengths Hendrie possessed.
“The great thing about him [Hendrie] was he could run, put himself about, you saw him on the pitch and people talk to me today about the similarities between him and Grealish,” Gregory told the Villa View on their official Youtube channel.
“Jack’s got huge amounts of potential but there are times when I’ve watched Jack play when you don’t notice him on the pitch. Hendrie, you noticed him.
“Sometimes with Jack, I find that you don’t see him for 20 minutes or so.”
Grealish has played 25 games in all competitions for Villa this season, scoring three goals and supplying five assists.
He is currently tasked to play his part in helping Steve Bruce’s side make a return to the Premier League – 16 points off the playoff places suggests it is a highly unlikely task this term.
Nonetheless, Grealish flourished for a small period of time in the top tier during the 2014/15 season when then Villa boss Tim Sherwood gave him regular game time.
The England under-21 international helped the club survive relegation that season, as well as play a man-of-the-match role in the semi-final of the FA Cup against Liverpool.
