John Hartson: This is why Arsenal will not make offer for 26-year-old superstar
By Will Butcher
John Hartson believes Arsenal will decide against making an offer for Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann because of manager Arsene Wenger.
Griezmann, 26, is constantly rumoured to be interesting a whole host of Europe’s biggest clubs, with The Sun claiming back in the summer that he has an £85.5million release clause.
However, former Gunners striker Hartson claimed on his personal Twitter account when replying to a fan that Arsenal will not move for Griezmann.
He believes that manager Wenger is “seldom in for the big players” and that would derail a potential move for Griezmann.

France international Griezmann has been in exceptional form for Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid this season, as he continues to prove he is one of the world’s best footballing talents.
Scoring 22 goals in his 40 league and cup outings this season, the former Real Sociedad playmaker has also provided 11 assists as Atleti sit in fourth place in La Liga.
The likes of Gunners icon Paul Merson have called on Wenger to blow the transfer market away by bringing in quality such as Griezmann, ahead of the summer transfer window.
But Hartson, who also played for the likes of Celtic, West Ham and Wimbledon, believes Wenger will explore other options in the summer.
Football Insider verdict:
A player like Griezmann could be the difference between Arsenal challenging for the top four in the Premier League, to actually launching a title bid. His ability would not only hugely benefit the Gunners in front of goal, but he has the aura to give the whole club a lift in terms of morale and atmosphere. Atleti’s number seven would also bring the best out of the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Theo Walcott, as he would add an extra attacking dimension to the Gunners front line. However, Wenger has consistently shown that he won’t pay inflated prices for players and that’s hurt him and Arsenal in previous seasons. Will the added pressure of this season force Wenger to spend big this summer in a bid to redeem his legacy?
