John Souttar shares Lundstram, Lawrence link-up amid Rangers contract uncertainty

John Souttar has shared a reunion with John Lundstram and Tom Lawrence as the clock ticks down on his own contract at Rangers.

Lawrence is one of the latest players to leave Ibrox, having not been offered a new deal this summer, joining Leon Balogun and Ianis Hagi out the exit door as Russell Martin‘s reign begins.

His injury problems plagued his time in Glasgow, making just 69 appearances since arriving as a free transfer in the summer of 2022, and Souttar is also facing time on the sidelines now.

The 28-year-old centre-back has become an integral part of the squad over the last two seasons, but with the new takeover taking centre stage, he has admitted that his contract extension has hit a roadblock.

Having now entered into the final 12 months of his current deal at Ibrox, some supporters are worried that the situation is set to carry on into the 2025/26 season, especially after linking up with former players.

John Souttar’s contract takes a backseat at Rangers

Taking to Instagram stories (27 June), Souttar reshared Lundstram’s post of the trio’s reunion, simply captioning the image with three blue love hearts.

Russell Martin to get new squad sorted ahead of next season

Football Insider verdict

Martin has plenty of work to do before the Gers can begin making a charge for the Scottish Premiership title against Old Firm rivals, Celtic, and tying Souttar down to a new deal is a must.

Robin Propper, Clinton Nsiala, and Balogun were all battling for one of the centre-back spots throughout the 2024/25 season, but the Scotland international never shifted from the defence.

The squad is in desperate need of more players like him, having even played through an injury before needing surgery this summer, and the Light Blues will be linked with players from across the world in the coming weeks.

Football Insider understands that Rangers have opened talks to sign Peterborough United‘s Emmanuel Fernandez, and while he is a talented player, fans are slightly underwhelmed.

The new takeover heightened expectations immensely, but fans need to control their feelings and use their heads as Martin begins to understand exactly what the squad needs this summer.

Both Hamza Igamane and Nico Raskin could end up leaving in the coming weeks, even despite the manager’s desire to build around the duo, and that would be a massive blow to the Light Blues.
