John Souttar’s future examined as Rangers want to keep Emmanuel Fernandez and Nasser Djiga
John Souttar faces an uncertain future at Rangers despite only putting pen to paper on a contract extension in February.
The 29-year-old’s current deal is set to expire in the summer of 2027, with an option for the Gers to extend by another year, but his departure could come much sooner than that.
Football Insider understands that Danny Rohl still sees Souttar playing a crucial role at Ibrox, but the club’s actions in the transfer market would suggest otherwise.
Rangers’ transfer tactics could change under new management, and the futures of Nasser Djiga and Emmanuel Fernandez could have a huge impact on what happens to the Scotland international.

Despite the experience of Souttar, Rohl has often decided to partner Djiga and Fernandez in the centre of defence for the Gers’ most important matches of the last few weeks.
Both players are in very different situations in their careers, with the former only on loan with the Light Blues until the end of the season, while the latter is already being tipped for a big move away.
Many have suggested that Fernandez could break the club’s record departure fee, and at the same time, Football Insider understands that Rangers are facing hurdles to sign Djiga from Wolves.
| Scottish Premiership stats 2025-26 | John Souttar | Emmanuel Fernandez | Nasser Djiga |

If the Gers can somehow work miracles and keep both stars at Ibrox this summer, it would almost guarantee a reduced role for Souttar, and maybe even a permanent exit for the 29-year-old.
Could John Souttar leave Rangers this summer?
Reports would indicate that Souttar earns around £12,000-a-week, earning him upwards of £624,000 a year. It’s safe to say that he could be earning more elsewhere in the United Kingdom.
However, the defender’s full focus will be on staying fit ahead of the 2026 World Cup, with the hope of leading Scotland out against Haiti, Morocco and Brazil.
Questions about his future at club level would only serve as a distraction ahead of and during the tournament, so it would make sense for the centre-half to just remain at Ibrox this summer.
He may have to come to terms with fewer minutes next season, especially if Rohl can keep his preferred partnership at Ibrox, but right now, there should be no concerns about his potential exit.
