Rangers legend Derek Johnstone admits he’ll “never know” how Alfredo Morelos missed an 88th minute sitter in Sunday’s Old Firm clash that would have drawn his side level and given them a deserved point.
The Ibrox star somehow managed to hit the post from a few yards with the goal at his mercy and the Gers trailing 3-2.
Morelos had earlier missed a one-on-one with Hoops goalkeeper Scott Bain when defender Kristoffer Ajer managed to get a touch on Morelos’ strike and take the sting out of it.
Johnstone admits everybody on Ibrox was already on their feet before Morelos’ inexplicable miss that saw the Gers chances fade away.
“The first one he missed when he ran through, he’s done that several times this season,” Johnstone said, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.
“Morelos seems to have something in his head when he goes through with the keeper to beat, he just can’t finish. But the one in the 88th minute when Bain had a magnificent save and parried it out to him.
“How he’s missed from four yards, and hit the inside of the post and back into the keeper’s arms, I’ll never know.
“Everybody in the ground was up on their feet cheering thinking it’s a certainty to go into the net. It didn’t and that was the last chance Rangers had.”
The result leaves the Gers nine points behind their bitter rivals in the Scottish Premiership and kills off any chances the Gers had of snatching the league title from Celtic.
Morelos has scored 17 times in 35 appearances for the Gers to help them to second in the table and a Scottish Cup semi-final against Brendan Rodgers’ side at Hampden next month.
Football Insider verdict:
Johnstone is maybe being a bit harsh on Morelos given the first chance that Johnstone claims he “can’t finish” was blocked by Celtic’s Kristoffer Ajer which took much of the pace – and direction – off his strike. His second chance was terrible though and he really should have done better with it. At 21, Morelos still has a long way to go until he’s the finished article and misses such as that – and it really was horrendous – should make him a stronger player mentally. Although for someone who “can’t finish” a goal every other game is apretty incredible record. Imagine what it would be if he could.
