Johnstone: This is what Rangers players must be thinking before Gerrard arrives

Rangers legend Derek Johnstone believes the Gers squad will need to prove to incoming manager Steven Gerrard that they are good enough to stay at the club when he takes charge next week.

Gerrard takes the reins next week and has already landed three signings to bolster the Gers squad with Scott Arfield, Allan McGregor and Jamie Murphy all agreeing moves.

Johnstone thinks the players will be “thrilled” Gerrard is Ibrox-bound but is adamant that they need to show the Liverpool icon they have what it takes to play for the Light Blues.

“The players who are at Rangers just now must be thrilled knowing a man like that is coming in to coach them,” Johnstone said, as quoted by the Gers’ official website.

“But they have to say to themselves, ‘are we good enough to play here?’ That’s what every player will be saying, and they will be hoping the answer to that is yes.

“They have got to prove to him they are good enough to play for his team, and I think if you are a Rangers player, you should be excited, but you have to show the manager that you have got to be good enough to play in this side.”

Football Insider verdict:

Gerrard’s arrival next week will likely have a few of the current players very worried about their long-term future at Ibrox after some of the performances that were offered up last term. With an already bloated squad, there is a good chance that there will be a sizeable clear-out of players from Ibrox this summer as the likes of Lee Hodson, Harry Forrester, Joe Dodoo and other are moved on elsewhere. Far too many players at the club in recent years haven’t been able to deal with the pressure and expectation that comes with playing for the Gers and Gerrard’s recruitment is going to be vital in making sure the Ibrox giants are in a position to challenge bitter rivals Celtic next season and try to end their recent dominance of the Scottish game. After being there and doing it all in a Rangers jersey, Johnstone is well-positioned to know exactly what is required to be a success with the Gers.
