Jonathan Woodgate delivers verdict on Tottenham key man, identifies six qualities
By Harvey Byrne
Former Tottenham ace Jonathan Woodgate has claimed current Spurs star Toby Alderweireld is one of the “top three centre-backs in the Premier League.”
The former England international had an impressive career playing for the likes of Leeds, Newcastle, Spurs and Real Madrid.
He was one of the better centre-backs of his generation and he now believes that Alderweireld is one of the best in the English top flight.
The now 36-year-old was full of praise for Alderweireld and identified his ability to hit passes, tenacity, pace, aggression, concentration and organisation as some of his many qualities.
“He’s in the top three best centre-backs in the Premier League,” started Woodgate to the Spurs match day programme, as quoted by Football London.

“Why? He can do everything. I watched him at Ajax, Atletico Madrid and Southampton. He was top notch there and then he came to Spurs.
“He’s shown a lot at the Lane already. He can hit diagonal passes and hit them easily, that’s something in his locker. He’s tenacious in the tackle, quick – as is the whole of the backline at Spurs – and he’s aggressive.
“One of the key strengths that separates a solid centre-back out as as one of the best around is concentration. I played with centre-backs in my career who had raw ability but one lapse in concentration would lead to a goal.
“They could be good for 89 minutes but then give a goal away and they’d go from an eight of our ten performance to five out of ten in an instant. Organisation is so important as well. He’s got all that.”
Alderweireld made the switch to White Hart Lane in the summer of 2015 for an £11.5million fee from Atletico Madrid.
He caught the eye of the north London club while on loan at Southampton in the previous campaign and he has continued to star in the Premier League with Tottenham.
The centre-back has built a formidable partnership in the Spurs back line alongside fellow countryman Jan Vertonghen, which sees Mauricio Pochettino’s side boast the best goals against record in the Premier League.
He will now be looking to help Tottenham challenge for their first Premier League title as they sit seven points behind leaders Chelsea.
