Jordan Pickford subjected to surprising chants from England fans during win vs Andorra
Jordan Pickford was a bystander for much of England’s World Cup qualifier 2-0 win over Andorra at Villa Park.
Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson was handed his England debut on Saturday, 6 September, with Marcus Rashford, Eberechi Eze, and Noni Madueke joining Harry Kane in attack.
Despite that quartet seeing most of the possession, they experienced the most frustration as Christian Garcia’s own goal and Declan Rice‘s effort made all the difference for the Three Lions.
The manager raised a few eyebrows when admitting that Mason Greenwood’s return to the England squad was not ruled out, but fans were fully focused on the performance in the Midlands.
All three points at Villa Park see Thomas Tuchel‘s side remain top of Group K, five points clear of Serbia, who beat Latvia earlier on Saturday, but supporters were given few moments to shout about.
Villa Park crowd wants Jordan Pickford to shoot
With fans looking for something to get excited about during the 2-0 win, Pickford tried to get himself involved, having been untroubled for the majority of the 90 minutes.
Reporting live from the game, Dom Smith via The Standard (6 September), wrote: “Cries of ‘shoot’ from some England fans as Jordan Pickford controls the ball on the halfway line. Yep.”
The Everton star touched the ball just 24 times, only more times than Harry Kane of England players to start the game at Villa Park [FotMob].
Where are England in Group K after Andorra victory?
Unsurprisingly, England are top of Group K after four matches, beating Albania, Latvia, and Andorra twice since Tuchel took charge of his first game back in March.
Group K Teams | Played | Won | Drawn | Lost | Goal Difference | Points |
1. England | 4 | 4 | 0 | 0 | +8 | 12 |
2. Serbia | 3 | 2 | 1 | 0 | +4 | 7 |
3. Albania | 4 | 1 | 2 | 1 | +1 | 5 |
4. Latvia | 4 | 1 | 1 | 2 | -3 | 4 |
5. Andorra | 5 | 0 | 0 | 5 | -10 | 0 |
However, fans remain concerned over their team’s performances against lesser opposition, which the new head coach will be keen to address before the 2026 World Cup.
His team had plenty of chances, especially in the closing stages, to add some excitement to the victory, but it was far too comfortable for the Three Lions, who remain top of Group K.
