Jose Mourinho to Rangers: Expert shares manager update today – ‘this is the truth’
Jose Mourinho is unlikely to be named the next Rangers manager despite his recently-expressed desire to one day manage in Glasgow.
That is according to former Man United chief scout and Sir Alex Ferguson number two Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the club are not in a position to attract the former Chelsea boss.
Mourinho would expect to be backed in the transfer market to strengthen his squad – something that is unlikely to happen in the summer.
Meanwhile, the current players available remain some way off of challenging Celtic at the top of the table as proven by their 16-point deficit.
Brown told Football Insider on 10 March that Mourinho wants to manage Rangers and has made his availability known after his recent press conference claim.
However, the idea of taking over at Ibrox outweighs the reality at the moment given the turbulent situation the club finds itself in both on and off the pitch.
While the Portuguese manager may become an option in the future, it is currently considered unlikely that he will be chosen as Philippe Clement’s permanent successor.

Jose Mourinho unlikely to be appointed as Rangers manager
Brown suggested the potential takeover by 49ers Enterprises at Rangers could put the club in a stronger position to attract big-name managers.
However, the former scout who has a wealth of experience working with elite managers such as Ron Atkinson and Alex Ferguson during over a decade at Man United, explained that Mourinho is unlikely to take the job as things stand.
“I’m not convinced it’s something that will happen immediately,” he told Football Insider.
“I don’t think Rangers are in a position to attract Mourinho right now, as much as he might want the job and the idea of what the job would be.
“If he went there, I think he’d want to be buying players to improve his squad.
“I don’t think Rangers are in that market at the moment.
“They’re in a tricky financial position, and that might be improved if these new owners come in, but that will be a long-term process.
“So I don’t think the job at the moment is what Mourinho thinks it is.
“He wouldn’t be able to come in and immediately be right up there with Celtic, because the truth is this squad isn’t good enough for that.
“With the little money they’re going to be able to spend, that’s not going to change quickly.
“So I think he’s open to managing Rangers one day, but I doubt it will be this summer.”

Rafa Benitez joins Jose Mourinho in race for Ibrox job
Alongside Mourinho, a number of high-profile managers have been linked with the vacant role at Ibrox including the likes of Steven Gerrard and Sean Dyche.
Now, Brown told Football Insider on 11 March that former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez is interest in the Rangers job as he seeks a return to British football.
Benitez’s last managerial position was with La Liga outfit Celta Vigo, where he was dismissed in March 2024 after picking up just five wins in 28 games.
This comes after Ibrox hero Ally McCoist exclusively told Football Insider, with talkSPORT BET, that Benitez is interested in the Rangers job.
