Rangers attacker Josh Windass has sensationally claimed Andy Halliday is better than Real Madrid star Marcelo after playing left-back for the Gers in their dominant win over St. Johnstone at McDiarmid Park on Tuesday – and then insisted his comment was “not banter.”
Halliday came into the starting XI after injury forced Declan John out of the 4-1 win over Tommy Wright’s side and done reasonably well for Graeme Murty’s side as they recorded a fifth consecutive win.
Despite playing there regularly earlier in his career, Halliday has only been used at left-back once for the Gers in a competitive game – the recent win over Partick Thistle – but didn’t look out of place on the left of the Light Blues’ defence.
Shortly after the full-time whistle, Windass took to Twitter to praise Halliday’s performance against the Saints and claimed he was better than elite defender Marcelo.
“Marcelo < Andy Halliday,” Windass said on his personal Twitter account.

Unsurprisingly, Rangers fans thought Windass had his tongue firmly planted in his cheek when he made the comment before he replied “its not banter” to a fan who had responded.

After Windass’ recent comments to the Gers’ in-house TV channel about how he likes omlettes but can’t eat eggs and his confusion over a hen being a female chicken there’s every possibility Windass genuinely believes Halliday is a better left-back than the 29-year-old Brazil and Real Madrid star.
Halliday has made two starts since returning from an ill-fated loan spell with Azerbaijani side FK Gabala before the Gers cut it short and brought him back to Scotland six months early.
