‘That’s the fact’ – Jurgen Klopp lashes out after draw v Newcastle
By Russell Edge
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has lashed out after seeing his side come away from their clash with Newcastle United with a solitary point.
Phillipe Coutinho’s exceptional first half strike, which was hit from at least 25 yards away from Rob Elliot’s goal, gave the Reds the lead at St James’ Park on Sunday.
However they were unable to push on from the opener and were pegged back by a fortuitous Joselu goal, after the ball ricocheted off the striker and past Simon Mignolet in the Liverpool net.
It was a tightly contested affair, with Liverpool hitting the woodwork and Newcastle testing the Belgian goalkeeper, but full time came with both sides sharing the points.
Despite leaving Tyneside with a point, Liverpool boss Klopp was furious with his side’s inability to convert their chances, stating that the Reds only gave the Magpies one opportunity to score, which they managed to do.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, the German manager said: “We create and create and we made one mistake – a real mistake – and we got punished for it.
“The opponent (Newcastle United) made a lot more mistakes that were forced by us and did not get punished for it.
“If you don’t help yourself, nobody else helps you so we have to score in these situations. That’s clear.
“We had the big moments, unbelievable big moments, and scored only once. The opponent didn’t have too many chances and also scored once and that’s the fact.”
The result means that despite gaining a point Liverpool have fallen to seventh place on 12 points, level with Burnley and Watford, with Newcastle a point behind in ninth.
Both sides will have to wait before they get the chance to return to winning ways, with the international break meaning that there is a two week gap between fixtures.
