Klopp: This is the position new Liverpool arrival wants in the future

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has revealed that Steven Gerrard has told him he wants to take up a management position in the future.

It was confirmed by the club’s official website on Friday that the Liverpool legend was to rejoin his childhood club as a youth coach after retiring from playing the game in November 2016.

Speaking to BBC Sport ahead of Wednesday night’s Capital One Cup semi-final clash against Southampton, Klopp confirmed that Gerrard opened up to him about his future ambitions.

“He said he wants to be a manager in the future. That’s cool,” Klopp said to the BBC.

“It was important to know what Steven wants. Being a manager is a job you have to learn and he is ready to make steps.

“Combining his playing experience with all the things he has to learn, he has a bright future. Everyone in this room knows better than I do he is a wonderful guy and it’s wonderful news for football.”

Gerrard was previously linked with the job at MK Dons after they sacked manager Karl Robinson in November, but he admitted at the time that it would be too soon for him to go straight into management.

The 36-year-old is currently working towards his UEFA A coaching license, which is a required to manage a Premier League club.

Gerrard made a total 734 appearances in all competitions across a career which lasted almost two decades winning one Champions League, two FA Cups, three League Cups and one UEFA Cup.

He will now be looking to pass his strong influence down to a number of current emerging stars in the Reds’ youth ranks, which includes Ben Woodburn, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ovie Ejaria.
