Kalvin Phillips has paid tribute to the quality of new Leeds United signing Samuel Saiz by hailing him as “one of the best players” he has encountered in his career.
Saiz marked his Leeds debut with a brilliant hat-trick in the team’s League Cup triumph over Port Vale in midweek.
The playmaker produced three classy finishes to set up a 4-1 win in the first round of the competition and announce himself after a £3million move from Spanish side Huesca last month.
Phillips, who has also begun the season in style with a two-goal display in last weekend’s 3-2 Championship triumph against Bolton Wanderers, has been struck by Saiz’s ability and compared him to fellow Spaniard and Leeds teammate Pablo Hernandez.
“Pablo is one of the best players I’ve played with and Samu is along those lines,” said Phillips on Friday afternoon, as quoted by the Twitter account of Radio Yorkshire.

The Leeds academy product was speaking ahead of the team’s first home league match of the campaign, which takes place against Preston on Saturday afternoon.
Phillips is expected to start in central midfield alongside Eunan O’Kane after his impressive performance last weekend.
