Keith Wyness: Chelsea’s latest financial breach will be ‘swept under the carpet’ in ‘worrying’ twist
Chelsea’s latest breach of financial regulations could be quickly swept under the carpet and ignored.
Since Todd Boehly took control of the West London club in 2022, they have spent more than £2billion on player signings.
However, this is nothing new as the Blues have always been heavy spenders following the takeover of Roman Abramovich back in 2004.
Now, Chelsea have been charged by the FA with 74 alleged rule breaches relating to payments to agents between 2009 and 2022 when Abramovich was in charge.
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes the rule-breaking will be ignored because it was so long ago.

Todd Boehly knew what he was getting into
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that while the breaches happened under Abramovich, Boehly knew exactly what he was getting into and would have to accept any punishment.
Chelsea could be handed a transfer embargo, but may also get away with just a fine.
Wyness added that the whole thing could actually be swept under the carpet and forgotten about.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “You know what makes me worry a little bit is that these things are going to be almost to a degree swept under the carpet, rather than actually showing that these things are wrong.
“I know it was a past owner, I’m fully aware of that, but I’m afraid when you buy the club, that’s part of the things that you have to accept.
“Hopefully, we can move on from this particular issue and problem. There’s enough going on.”
Chelsea facing issue with £15m deal
Meanwhile, Chelsea’s talks over a new sleeve sponsorship deal appear to have stalled after a senior figure’s exit has been confirmed at Stamford Bridge, sources have told Football Insider.
Football Insider revealed on Friday (19 September) that Chelsea are looking to agree a £15million-a-year deal after starting the new season without a sleeve sponsor.

However, Chelsea have been hit by a new sponsorship blow following the departure of chief revenue officer Casper Stylsvig.
In more bad news, the Blues had been in talks with the Haier Group – a Chinese manufacturing company – but it appears the negotiations have now stalled between the two parties.
