Keith Wyness reveals more about ‘taxation issue’ that could block Rangers appointing Steven Gerrard

Rangers have been told to avoid the reappointment of Steven Gerrard as he is missing one skill that they desperately need right now.

Russell Martin was sacked after just four months in charge of the Gers, leaving the club in a state of disarray.

Gerrard has opened talks with the Rangers hierarchy in London and is the current favourite to replace Martin at Ibrox.

The former Liverpool midfielder spent over three years at the club between 2018 and 2021, and was the last manager to win the Scottish Premiership with the Glasgow club.

Steven Gerrard lacks the experience to be a success

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Gerrard is missing the skills needed to be a success at Rangers.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that while the 45-year-old is popular among Gers supporters, he doesn’t have the experience of rebuilding a squad and taking things forward.

Gerrard left Rangers back in November 2021, just six months after winning the Scottish title, in favour of a move to Aston Villa.

Wyness added that the Englishman didn’t exactly depart on the best of terms.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I would not be a fan of Stevie G coming back to Rangers. I don’t think it’s easy to return in football.

“There were a lot of mixed feelings about him from the fan base as well when he left. I also understand there’s a technical issue around his taxation situation from his time in Saudi Arabia. So that will all have to be negotiated and factored in, and Rangers aren’t exactly flush with cash just now.

“While he’s popular with some of the fan base, he may not be the right solution for them right now. I don’t think he’s got the experience in terms of rebuilding and taking things forward.”

Top candidate out of the race for Rangers job

Meanwhile, Sean Dyche will not be appointed as the next Rangers manager, despite being one of the frontrunners when Martin was sacked.

Dyche was on the shortlist of the Gers hierarchy, but is reportedly not interested in the job.

The 54-year-old has been out of work since he was sacked by Everton back in January, but it seems he will continue to bide his time and wait for the right role to come around.

Dyche has spent the whole of his playing and subsequent managerial career in England and had a 10-year spell in charge of Burnley.
