Keith Wyness reveals who Liverpool fans want as their next manager – ‘He keeps being mentioned’

Xabi Alonso is one of the favourites to replace Arne Slot at Liverpool among the club’s fanbase.

That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes Liverpool fans are “turning against” Slot.

Liverpool are considering a move for Alonso if they sack Slot, with the 44-year-old having been out of work since being sacked by Real Madrid earlier this month.

Slot could face the sack at Liverpool if they fail to qualify for the Champions League this season, with the Reds currently sixth in the Premier League table.

Arne Slot faces ‘big problem’ at Liverpool

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – thinks Slot’s future is on a “knife edge.”

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness has revealed what he has heard when speaking to Liverpool supporters.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Certainly the fan base seems to be turning against him from all the local people I’ve been speaking to.

“There isn’t that, you know, complete 100% support now. Alonso keeps being mentioned every time that you speak to Liverpool fans. So I do see that being a big problem for Slot just now. It could be, as I say, it could be very quick in the short-term if he can consolidate these next three games and then get back into the top four, five, and don’t forget fifth this year looks like a Champions League spot.

“Then I think he’ll be okay, and they might be given more time, but it can go either way. He is on a knife edge right now, that’s for sure.”

Slot faces crucial period as Liverpool boss

Slot faces a crucial next set of fixtures as manager, with the Reds currently winless in five in the Premier League.

Liverpool host Newcastle and Man City before travelling to Sunderland and Nottingham Forest in the league, with an FA Cup tie against Brighton in-between.

Virgil van Dijk has been among the Liverpool stars criticised for their performances this season, which could contribute to Slot’s sacking if they do not step up in the next few matches.
