Kevin Keegan believes Newcastle will maintain their stronghold on the rest of the Championship by gaining promotion as champions come May.
The Toon currently sit three points clear at the top of England’s second tier, as Rafa Benitez continues to mastermind an instant return to the Premier League.
Speaking to the Shields Gazette, former Magpies and England manager Keegan is adamant that Benitez will orchestrate his side’s return to the top flight after suffering relegation last season.
“It’s so important that they get back in the Premier League, and I think they’ll do that this year,” Keegan claimed.
“They’ll win the league and they’ll get back to where they belong. Then it’s tough, but it’s a big enough club to carry it and it’s got all this fantastic support.”

Newcastle have retained top spot after a wonderful eight days in the Championship that saw them go up against promotion rivals Brighton, Huddersfield and Reading.
Although facing all three high-flying outfits away from home, the Toon have come away with two wins and a draw that has seen them reaffirm their position at the Championship’s summit.
Now, the north east giants have the chance to stretch their lead at the top, as they play host to another in-form side in Slavisa Jokanovic’s Fulham on Saturday.
A 25th Championship win of the season will see Benitez’s men move on to 80 points for the season, and potentially six points clear if Brighton lose to Derby County on Friday night.
