Kevin Phillips shares ‘giant’ Leeds prediction after Sir Alex Ferguson claim
Leeds United can secure a top-six finish in the Premier League next season, according to Kevin Phillips.
The former Sunderland striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, has made the bold claim United can gatecrash the European spots under Marcelo Bielsa.
Legendary ex-Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson recently told GQ that one-city sides like Leeds have always “got a chance” of winning the league.
While Phillips refuses to extend his vision that far, he has made an exciting prediction for Leeds fans.
When asked by Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs whether the Whites can challenge for Europe next season, Phillips said: “I think they can challenge yeah, definitely. I don’t see them winning the Premier League, though.
“But I definitely see them challenging for a top-six place.
“It just depends on the signings, to take them to that next level. You need a top-class striker there to challenge and get into that top six, so they obviously need help for Bamford. There are two or three areas that they probably need top-class players to break into that top six.
“But I think Leeds are growing again, back into that big giant of a club. Next season is huge, it’s critical in where Leeds go in terms of moving forwards and challenging for European football.”
Leeds finished the 2020/21 Premier League season in ninth place, six points behind West Ham who took the final Europa League berth.
It was the club’s first campaign back in the top-flight after a 16-year hiatus.
