Key Alexander Isak stat proves that Newcastle were right sign Yoane Wissa

Alexander Isak finally secured his sensational move away from Newcastle United on transfer deadline day, joining Liverpool.

Isak’s deal became the most expensive ever on deadline day, with the £125 million fee also breaking the British transfer record, the second time Liverpool have done that this window.

In response, Newcastle immediately reinvested their new fortune in Yoane Wissa from Brentford, a long-term transfer target of the Tyneside club.

Like Isak, Wissa went on strike on Brentford, and the West London club finally sanctioned the move as Newcastle met their lofty £55m valuation.

Yoane Wissa replaces Alexander Isak

Alongside Wissa, Newcastle added Stuttgart’s Nick Woltemade for a club-record fee of over £60m, to partner the ex-Brentford man.

On X (formerly Twitter), xG Philosophy highlighted one stat that may be of interest to Newcastle United fans.

The stat suggests that Wissa actually generated more expected goals from open play than Isak did last season in the Premier League.

Wissa doesn’t arrive to Newcastle with the same stature as Isak but he does bring a proven record on scoring goals in the Premier League, something that might soften the blow.

Eddie Howe finally gets striker reinforcements

Football Insider verdict

Eddie Howe had endured a torrid window with several targets ending up at other clubs, and his star striker wanting away from the club.

Howe’s attacking options were under the microscope and even more so as Anthony Gordon’s red card against Liverpool saw the English winger suspended for three games.

Eddie Howe’s forward options

With the Magpies playing in four competitions this year, including the Champions League their swuad depth has been a point of discussion in the build-up to this season.

Woltemade and Wissa now gives Howe both a great striker partnership dynamic, but also a nice rotation between his forward options when the games start to build up.
