The agent of Benfica defender Lisandro Lopez has said that he knows nothing about interest from Newcastle United in his client.
The centre back has endured a difficult campaign so far, with just four appearances from a possible 18 for the Portuguese giants under his belt, and has been missing from the match day squad for five of the last six league matches.
When discussing the 28-year-old’s future, his agent Gustavo Goni admitted that there had been some interest from English sides, but refuted any claims that they had held any discussions with Newcastle over a potential move.
He told Sport Witness: “The truth is that about Newcastle we didn’t not know anything. At least nobody talked to us, but yes, there are several interested.”
“Only approaches from England, no concrete offer.
“I don’t like to say names when there is nothing concrete because Lisandro is a player who has his own name made in Europe.”
Newcastle currently have no less than four central defenders on their books, while left back Paul Dummett has also featured in that role in previous matches.
Football Insider verdict
It is interesting that the agent has chosen to mention that Newcastle have not been in touch, but should not surprise many. The Magpies spent a long time pursuing summer signing Florian Lejeune and his arrival seemingly filled up the slots for centre backs under Rafael Benitez. None of those at St James’ Park have looked like they are set to leave the club, and only the sale of Chancel Mbemba would likely be considered over January. Still, there is rarely smoke without fire when it comes to football transfer rumours, and it may be that Lopez was indeed a summer target before Newcastle captured the former Eibar man. Have they retained interest for a possible future move? His agent did mention interest from England but at the moment there is nothing official taking place.
