Khusanov ‘to generate huge profit out of Tottenham or Newcastle’

Tottenham and Newcastle are chasing Lens centre-back Abdukodir Khusanov ahead of a deal in the next transfer window which is expected to net his club a “huge profit”, The Telegraph reports.

The Uzbekistan international was bought by the French club for just €100,000 [£83,000] but could now be prized away by Spurs or the Magpies for around £25million [£20.7m].

The 20-year-old has forced his way into Lens’ team after arriving from Belarusian club Energetik-BGU Minsk just 18 months ago but now seven Premier League clubs want him .

Ange Postecoglou is dealing with injuries in defence at Spurs while Eddie Howe wants a defender after missing out on Marc Guehi in the summer and Newcastle think the youngster is ready to step up.

Spurs are yet to decide whether they need a centre-back in January after injuries have denied them their first-choice pairing of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven in recent weeks. Their glorious 4-0 win over Man City came when Ben Davies moved inside to centre-back to partner Radu Dragusin.

However the Welshman, 31, is in the final year of his contract and can probably not be trusted to stand in for his teammates for an extended run of games.

The Magpies meanwhile, have watched the 20-year-old and consider him a promising young talent who could make the step up to the Premier League from French football.

Eddie Howe’s side have been aiming to improve their defence since the summer transfer window after injuries to Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles left them short of options this season.

Despite his immense potential, Khusanov has made just 58 senior appearances in his career and 35 of those came in the Belarusian second tier. He has also picked up 16 caps for Uzbekistan but is seen as relatively inexperienced and a risky buy for both Tottenham and Newcastle.
