Noel Whelan has been left fuming as Albian Ajeti reportedly weighs up whether he wants to join Celtic on loan from West Ham.
The former Leeds and Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, insists that the 23-year-old should be jumping at the chance to join the Bhoys after a frustrating year at the London Stadium.
The Scottish Sun reports that Ajeti has returned to Switzerland to consider the prospective loan-to-buy move after a deal was agreed between the two clubs.
Whelan insists the striker should not need to consider his options when a club like Celtic come knocking and that Neil Lennon should consider axing the move.
Asked if alarm bells were ringing over the deal, Whelan told Football Insider: “Yeah, massively. Quite frankly, if I was Neil Lennon, I’d be like: ‘If he needs time to think then I’m not having him.’
“He should be a player that wants to play for Celtic, he’s playing in Europe, he’s not playing in Europe at West Ham – he’s not even playing at West Ham!
“He should have been jumping at the opportunity to be part of a team that’s going to be challenging for every single cup, the league, possibly in the Champions League – what else is there to think about?
“I mean, to me, that’s like a kick in the face.”
Ajeti has played just 12 times for the Hammers to date but is yet to find the back of the net in east London.
A 10-cap international for Switzerland, he joined the Irons after scoring 43 goals in 96 appearances for FC Basel.
