Kieran Maguire explains ‘the real problem’ at Everton as source today reveals another senior exit

Kieran Maguire has claimed “it’s clear” Everton manager Rafael Benitez “pointed the finger” at Marcel Brands prior to his departure.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the football finance expert suggested one of the two had to go and Farhad Moshiri “backed Benitez”.

Everton confirmed on (5 December) that Brands had been relieved of his duties as director of football.

Football Insider exclusively revealed last Monday (6 December) that head of recruitment Gretar Rafn Steinsson was in line to follow Brands through the exit.

The source has updated to reveal that Steinsson has now left the club.

Maguire explained how Financial Fair Play regulations and “poor” decision making are at the heart of Everton’s shortcomings.

“When you have a new owner, one of the issues you find is that recruitment is hit and miss,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“You only have to look back to what happened at Chelsea and Manchester City. Yes, they both delivered trophies but what they were began the process in the pre-FFP era.

“If they got a transfer wrong, like Shevchenko, they could just sign another player. Chelsea had loads of turkeys.

“Man City had the likes of Robinho, Roque Santa Cruz and Wilfried Bony. They had a list full of duffers.

“If you do that in the pre-FFP era, all that you do is suck it up. However, Everton cannot do that because of FFP.

“They have made some poor recruitment decisions. The likes of Cenk Tosun.

“I don’t think Moshiri is the real problem. He has provided the budget. It is the people he has delegated the decision making to who have made the problems. The decision making has been poor. They have gone through managers quickly.

“It’s clear that Benitez was pointing the finger at Brands. It was effectively Benitez or Brands and Moshiri has backed Benitez.”

In other news, Benitez has been tipped to lure a ‘brilliant’ ex-Arsenal star to Everton after reliable outlet’s update.
