Kieran Maguire: Nottingham Forest new ‘masterplan’ is exempt from financial rules

Premier League financial rules will not consider stadium costs as Nottingham Forest plan to expand City Ground.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that Forest can go ‘full steam ahead’ with stadium plans as they are exempt from Profit and Sustainability Rules.

As revealed by The Athletic, Forest have hatched a ‘master plan’ to expand City Ground to a capacity of 40,000 as well as build a new state-of-the-art training ground.

It comes at a time when the club faces a possible points deduction for breaching Premier League financial rules.

Nottingham Forest stadium plan gets green light despite ongoing PSR case

Forest are set to hear the verdict of their charge by the end of the season after being charged with exceeding the allowable losses over a three-year period.

Maguire explained that Forest’s stadium plans will remain unaffected by financial regulations and will help the club to increase their overall revenue and wage bill.

Nottingham Forest’s financial issues are not to do with money because their owner is very independently wealthy,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

It’s to do with compliance with the cost-control rules.

The good news for Forest is that infrastructure costs are exempt from PSR and therefore they can go full steam ahead with this.

I also think that with new regulations that are likely to replicate that of UEFA, increasing revenues is absolutely critical.

For every extra £1 million that Forest can generate from matchday revenue at their expanded stadium that’s an extra £700,000 on their wage bill.
