Kieran Maguire shares ‘suspicious’ Nottingham Forest verdict after £49m news

Nottingham Forest should not be worried despite ranking last in the Fair Game Index for financial sustainability.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that Forest will likely remain ‘oblivious’ to the report’s findings.

Fair Game released its 2023 Index this month, ranking every football club in the Premier League and EFL according to four criteria – financial sustainability, good governance, fan engagement and equality standards.

In their Premier League table, Forest ranked last with a score of 17.2 out of 100.

Steve Cooper’s side came last in financial sustainability, governance score and equality standards.

Regarding the club’s finances, their last accounts in 2021/22 showed the club making a loss of £49.5million as they chased promotion to the Premier League.

After securing their spot in the top flight, Forest spent big in the transfer window, bringing in over 20 players for £152million.

Despite their huge transfer spend last year, Maguire insists that Forest won’t be worried about their Fair Game Index rating as it is an ‘arbitrary’ method of calculating sustainability.

“I don’t think Nottingham Forest will be too worried about their position in the Fair Game Index,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

“It does seem like a fairly arbitrary way to measure financial sustainability.

Like all metrics, it’s open to interpretation and re-interpretation.

My suspicion is that Nottingham Forest, while they have had significant spending over the course of the last 12 months, will continue to progress while being oblivious to the Fair Game report.
