Kieran Trippier: Eddie Howe could make mistake starting full-back as Newcastle star takes pre-Barcelona press conference
Kieran Trippier is likely to appear in the starting lineup after taking Newcastle United‘s pre-match press conference alongside Eddie Howe.
The right-back was part of the defensive line when the Magpies welcomed Barcelona to St James’ Park in their Champions League round of 16 first leg, but he lasted just 67 minutes.
While appearing in a press conference does not automatically mean that he will start the game, it certainly would suggest that he will be, especially given that he’s also the captain.
Newcastle ended up drawing 1-1 with Barcelona, now heading to the Camp Nou for the reverse fixture, and Howe’s side will need to be near-perfect if they are to come away with a victory.

After coming off early against the La Liga giants, the 35-year-old full-back was also benched for the 1-0 win over Chelsea at the weekend, which furthers the argument that he’ll be starting in Spain.
Trippier has a very mixed history when coming up against Barcelona, winning three, losing three and drawing two of his eight meetings, and will provide very little confidence ahead of the game.
His previous display won’t help much either, especially if he’s up against Raphinha again.
In 67 minutes, the full-back was dribbled past three times and lost three of his seven ground duels, while his opponent on the night created four chances, completed 100 per cent of his dribbles and won 71 per cent of his ground duels [FotMob].
Tino Livramento is a much safer choice against Raphinha
When Tino Livramento is back from injury and available, it makes far more sense to start the 23-year-old instead, but Howe might look for more experience away from St James’ Park.
The veteran has played in a whole host of vital matches at the very top level, whether that be for Tottenham, Atletico Madrid or the England national team.
However, with Howe under significant pressure this season, the Magpies’ boss must put his best players out on the pitch, and if Trippier is named on the teamsheet against Barcelona, there will be uproar.
