Kieran Trippier sends message to Newcastle teammate after England snub
Kieran Trippier had a message of support for a Newcastle teammate as they experienced contrasting fortunes with the latest England squad selection.
England are set for two World Cup qualifiers during the international break, facing Albania and Latvia, as Thomas Tuchel named his first squad on Friday (14 March).
Marcus Rashford earned a call-up to the England squad for the first time since March 2024, but Tuchel has already faced criticism from fans for leaving Morgan Gibbs-White out of the squad.
Trippier was also omitted from the squad, with competition fierce in the full-back positions as Kyle Walker was called up and Reece James also made his return. However, the Newcastle defender took a moment to recognise a teammate who received his first England call-up.
Dan Burn earns first England call-up after standout Newcastle displays
Dan Burn has received his first-ever England call-up, with Tuchel rewarding the defender for his consistent performances at club level.
Newcastle teammate Trippier shared his support on Instagram, posting a message that read: “Congrats Dan, fully deserved.”

Trippier himself has faced criticism from Newcastle fans this season, with calls for the club to move on from the experienced right-back due to inconsistent form.
With the emergence of Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall, Trippier’s role has been more limited, featuring just 17 times in the Premier League with only six starts.
However, with Hall now ruled out for the rest of the season, the 34-year-old could have a crucial role to play in the final months of the campaign.
Burn, on the other hand, has been a key figure for Eddie Howe, making 35 appearances and starting every Premier League match for the Magpies this season.
Premier League statistics | Kieran Trippier | Tino Livramento | Lewis Hall |
Appearances | 17 | 27 | 27 |
Starts | 6 | 22 | 24 |
Newcastle missing key players for Carabao Cup final against Liverpool
Newcastle are preparing for one of the most significant games in their recent history as they take on Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday (16 March) to try and end a 70-year wait for a trophy.
Trippier was involved in Newcastle’s last cup final, a defeat to Manchester United, and could feature again with the squad dealing with several key absences.
Anthony Gordon is suspended for the match following his red card against Brighton in the FA Cup, while Sven Botman remains sidelined.
Despite the setbacks, both Trippier and Burn are expected to play, and they will be hoping to produce a strong defensive display to help Newcastle make history before heading into the international break.
