Klopp delivers major Liverpool boost on injured star duo ahead of Southampton clash

By Emma Sanders

Jurgen Klopp has revealed Philippe Coutinho could return to the squad ahead of Wednesday evening’s clash against Southampton and Joel Matip has made his “first steps” in team training.

Liverpool will travel to St Mary’s to take on Southampton in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final and they could be boosted by the return of the star duo.

Reliable journalist Kristian Walsh posted on Twitter that Klopp had revealed Coutinho was in contention and he “is fit enough” to be in the squad.

Coutinho has been absent for over a month after he picked up an ankle injury in the 2-0 victory against Sunderland at the end of November.

The 24-year-old is considered by many to be the club’s best player and he was in sensational form prior to suffering the injury, building a terrific attacking trio with Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

He’s scored five Premier League goals in just 13 appearances so far this season and has added five assists to that tally in an impressive campaign.

Matip has been equally as good after joining the Reds on a free from Schalke in the summer but the centre-back was forced to miss the last six matches.

He missed the crucial 1-0 victories against Manchester City and Everton but was arguably the squad’s best defender in his opening 12 Premier League appearances.

In their absence, Liverpool suffered a slight dip in form when they dropped points against West Ham and Bournemouth in the league but they recorded impressive victories against the Merseyside and Manchester Blues, and are still second in the table.
