Klopp preparing mega £40m move for PL midfielder - report

By Derek Smithson

Liverpool are eyeing a final attempt to sign Arsenal midfielder Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain, according to a report.

The Daily Express claim that the Reds are ready to make a “last ditch” effort to sign the 23-year-old this summer from Premier League rivals Arsenal.

It is understood that the Merseyside club are hoping to intercept the England international signing a new £100,000-a-week deal at the Emirates Stadium, with the Gunners keen to extend his one year with them and set to table an improved contract.

The report details that Jurgen Klopp is prepared to pay £40million to secure his signature as a £35million move for Roma’s Mohamed Salah is in doubt.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has been with Arsenal since 2011 when he joined from Southampton and has become an extremely popular player with fans.

The versatile midfielder is recognised as a right winger by trade, but has openly expressed his desire to play in the centre too.

He made 45 appearances across all competitions last season, scoring six goals and supplying 11 assists in return.

Klopp is looking to bolster his squad ahead of a Champions League return next season, a competition that Arsenal will not be competing in after finishing fifth in the Premier League.

Football Insider verdict:

Oxlade-Chamberlain is a talented footballer and it’s easy to forget that he is only 23. The midfielder has 194 senior appearances for Arsenal already in his career and is also a regular in the England set-up. His versatility makes him an exciting prospect for Klopp and he would also join a strong English contingent in Anfield. However, £40million for a player that has 12 months remaining on their contract is far too large a price. Oxlade-Chamberlain has shown in glimpses his quality, but has not done enough yet to warrant that mega price. He has the potential to dominate Premier League matches and Liverpool could be a good place for him to continue his development, but should be valued at closer to the £20million bracket.

In other Liverpool transfer news, John Arne Riise believes that the club should sell their 27-year-old attacker.
