Kris Boyd makes fat joke at Jamie O’Hara after Cyriel Dessers wows for Rangers

Kris Boyd aimed a cruel joke at Jamie O’Hara in the Sky Sports studio in his excitement as Cyriel Dessers helped Rangers to take an early lead over Fenerbahce on Thursday.

Boyd was stunned as his former team took a 1-0 lead just seven minutes into the Europa League clash in Turkey, with the Nigerian taking full advantage on 6 March.

Jose Mourinho, who is a wanted figure back at Man United, was handed an early blow as the two sides battled it out for a spot in the quarter-finals, though there is still another game-and-a-half remaining.

And just 24 minutes later, Alexander Djiku scored an acrobatic effort to equal up the score, though Vaclav Cerny notched the Light Blues ahead again just three minutes before half-time.

Kris Boyd fires unexpected joke at Jamie O’Hara in Sky Sports studios

With Boyd almost speechless after Dessers squeaked a shot past goalkeeper Irfan Egribayat, and too much for Caglar Soyuncu to clear in time, he gathered himself before firing an unexpected dig at his fellow pundit.

Speaking live via Sky Sports News [6 March, 5:53pm], Boyd said: “It comes back off Diomande, Dessers goes around the keeper and gets his shot away, Soyuncu gets back but the ball is already over the line.

“What a start this has been. I’ve had a prepared salad for my dinner and Rangers are up 1-0 inside 7 minutes – something Jamie wouldn’t know about. It’s a long night ahead!”

The comments gained laughs from all involved, including O’Hara was the butt of the joke, before his team, Tottenham, went 1-0 down to AZ Alkmaar across Europe.

Cyriel Dessers continues to prove Rangers supporters wrong

Football Insider Verdict

Rangers supporters have wanted an exit for Dessers for months now, but with the player refusing to leave during the winter window, he is clearly desperate to keep his spot at Ibrox.

Hamza Igamane, who has gained interest from Everton in the Premier League, has been the first-choice striker, or at least he was under Philippe Clement, but Dessers has been favoured recently.

Cyriel Dessers has a goal or assist every 1.6 games for Rangers.

With 43 goals since arriving from Cremonense in July 2023, the criticism of the 30-year-old has always been rather baffling, even with the number of chances he misses in front of goal.

His link-up play in the final third could certainly be improved, but with other attacking stars around him to do the hard work and deliver the ball into the middle, he has been there to deliver the goods recently.

Barry Ferguson‘s interim reign has been incredibly rocky, coming from behind to beat Kilmarnock before losing to Motherwell, but the Gers have continued their incredible run in Europe this season.
