Lampard: This is why Chelsea will struggle in the Premier League this season
By Aramide Oladipo
Chelsea legend Frank Lampard believes that his former side will find it difficult to retain their Premier League title this season as they will be competing in the Champions League as well.
The Blues were not involved in the European competition last season after finishing outside of the top-four during the 2015-16 campaign.
Antonio Conte’s men appeared to benefit from playing just once a week as they strolled to their fifth Premier League title and finished seven points clear of second-placed Tottenham.
Chelsea were the second consecutive team without Champions League football who went on to win the league title after Leicester City.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with the Times, Lampard feels that Chelsea still need to add some players in order to mount a serious challenge on the league title while competing in the Champions League at the same time.

“I still think pound for pound, Chelsea’s first XI — and the way Conte sets them up — puts them right up there challenging for the title,” he said.
“The problem is that they’re going to be competing at Champions League level too, so I think the squad needs more depth to it, but I think they’re working on that.”
Chelsea have struggled in their recent appearances in the Champions League as they failed to progress past the Round of 16 stage on the last two occasions.
The Blues endured a miserable start to the new Premier League campaign, suffering a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Burnley at Stamford Bridge last weekend.
The champions will look to bounce straight back as they face London rivals Tottenham at Wembley Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
