Lascelles sends message to fans after Newcastle clinch promotion

By Dominic Toner

Newcastle captain Jamall Lascelles thanked supporters on Twitter after his side confirmed their return to the Premier League on Monday night.

The Magpies eased to a 4-1 home victory over Preston, with goals from Ayoze Perez (two), Christian Atsu and Matt Ritchie for the hosts.

Rafael Benitez’s side sealed their automatic promotion status with two games remaining and will now hope to overturn the four-point deficit to leaders Brighton for the Championship title.

Newcastle were the pre-season favourites to gain promotion and they have managed to deal with the major expectation.

Lascelles expressed his delight on social media with the club’s achievement and gave a special mention to the fans.

“Wow! What a season. A lot of ups and downs but the fans stood with us and believed in us. You have been our rock all season and I couldn’t be more happy. On behalf of all the players we appreciate you guys so much. Thank you!” Lascelles wrote on his personal Twitter account.

Lascelles has played a crucial role in Newcastle’s success this campaign and been an ever-present in defence.

The 23-year-old centre-back has featured in 43 of the 44 Championship games and build a strong partnership alongside Ciaran Clark.

The Magpies have the second best defensive record this season and have conceded just 40 league goals.

Meanwhile, the likes of Jonjo Shelvey, Dwight Gayle and Ritchie have been influential for Benitez’s side going forward.

In other Newcastle news, Alan Shearer has urged the club not to stand still after securing promotion.
