Latest Morelos twist leaves Rangers board facing potential black hole - Sources

Rangers are likely to have to settle for less than their £17million asking price for Alfredo Morelos as a late-window sale now looks increasingly possible, Football Insider has learned.

The striker, 24, was in advanced talks to join Lille earlier this month but their interest has diminished as they finalise the signing of Jonathan David from Gent.

Ibrox sources have told Football Insider that Morelos could now be at the club for quite some time and potentially even until close to the 5 October transfer deadline.

Rangers have paved the way for Morelos to leave by signing striker duo Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten over the last week for combined fees of more than £7m.

The board need a big-money sale to get their books in order and the Colombian is the club’s prize asset and most valuable player.

They could be left staring at a financial black hole if they cannot offload Morelos or another player – in-demand Borna Barisic is another possibility – for a fee well in excess of £10m.

This site revealed yesterday that AC Milan have now registered their interest in Morelos as they pursuit a proven goalscorer this window.

The Italian giants’ move is in the early stages and, as things stand, Morelos could be available for selection for quite some time.

The extended transfer window, which is open for five weeks later than last year following the pandemic, gives Rangers times to seal a deal.

But their hopes of getting a mammoth fee for Morelos is now less likely than it was two weeks ago.

The board may have to adjust their ambitions and reduce the forward’s asking price to £12-15m in the coming weeks.

Gerrard selected him ahead of Roofe and Itten for Wednesday’s 3-0 win over St Johnstone although the Swiss replaced the Colombian after 61 minutes.

Morelos had gone nine games without a goal, and netted once in 14, before his brace last Sunday against St Mirren took his Rangers total tally to 79 goals in 141 games.

In other news, Rangers have agreed a new deal worth more than £10million in total.
