Lee Johnson delivers verdict on Jonathan Kodjia ahead of Aston Villa clash against Bristol City
By Amir Mir
Lee Johnson has stated that the departure of Jonathan Kodjia from Bristol City to Aston Villa in the summer “wasn’t ideal”.
The Robins visit Villa Park on Tuesday night for an important Championship clash as Kodjia is set to face his former teammates.
The 27-year-old moved to the Midlands from Bristol last summer for a transfer fee that could rise up to £15million.
Kodjia was a key member of Johnson’s team last season as the Ivory Coast international netted 18 goals in 45 Championship games for the club.
Ahead of the midweek encounter, this is what Johnson had to say about Villa’s star man as posted by Bristol City’s official Twitter account.
“The timing of Kodjia’s departure wasn’t ideal,” said Johnson. “But, we are where we are. We wish him all the best, just not for tomorrow.”
During the reverse fixture at Ashton Gate in August, City recorded an impressive 3-1 win over Villa as the now sacked Roberto Di Matteo was in charge of the club.
Kodjia missed that encounter as he was set to make the switch to Villa. Since his move to the club, he has been one of their best players.
He has scored 11 goals for Bruce’s side, last finding the net during a 3-1 home defeat against Barnsley earlier on in the month.
The Robins come into the match having recorded an impressive 2-2 draw at St James’ Park on Saturday afternoon while Villa ended their five-match losing streak against Derby.
