Lee McCulloch: 'Marquee signing' would be real statement of intent from Rangers this summer
Former Rangers captain Lee McCulloch has admitted he is “hopeful” the Ibrox giants make a marquee signing this summer – claiming it would be a “real statement of intent” from the Light Blues and Steven Gerrard.
McCulloch believes Gerrard will be wanting to “flex his muscles” and bring a top quality signing to Ibrox – but admits it come down to what finances are available to fund any deal.
The former Wigan and Motherwell star also thinks that ther will be a few players a Ibrox “looking over their shoulders” as Gerrard gets to work rebuilding the squad he inherited last week.
“I am hopeful that there will be a marquee signing at Rangers this summer, a real statement of intent,” McCulloch said, as quoted by the Evening Times.
“The manager has given the full club and the fans a lift just by coming in, as has Gary McAllister, so I think on the pitch he will be looking to flex his muscles a wee bit and get a real quality signing over the line, and that all comes down to what money he has made available to him.
“There must be quite a few Rangers players looking over their shoulders at the moment, and particularly among the midfielders.”

Football Insider verdict:
Getting a marquee signing in would be a great move by the Gers and would only give the fans another reason to be a bit more optimistic about their side’s chances in the title race. With lots of excitement already around the Gers, signing someone who can add to that – as well as actually delivering on the pitch – can really help Gerrard’s side take that next step and give themselves a real shot at success in the coming season. The Gers can’t just go out and drop tens of millions on the latest star to breakthrough but Gerrard has a network of contacts throughout the game that he can lean on and take advantage of to help his chances of lifting the title. A marquee signing would also serve as a statement that Rangers aren’t happy just to settle for competing with the rest of the Scottish Premiership to be the best of the rest behind Celtic and let their bitter rivals know they are in for a fight to make it an eighth successive league flag.
