Leeds and Rangers-linked manager back in contention to replace Daniel Farke as announcement made

Davide Ancelotti was heavily linked with a move to replace Daniel Farke at Leeds United in the summer.

Rangers ultimately hired Russell Martin, but Ancelotti had been among the favourites to replace Philippe Clement at Ibrox, too.

The son of Carlo Ancelotti, the Italian spent several years as an assistant to his dad, joining him at Bayern Munich, Everton and Real Madrid before starting his own managerial journey.

Rangers came extremely close to hiring Ancelotti, but much of the discussion surrounding the 36-year-old regarded Leeds.

Despite leading his team to the Premier League, Leeds strongly considered sacking Farke in the summer, with Ancelotti among the favourites to replace him.

Botafogo make Davide Ancelotti announcement

Despite the links, Rangers would eventually opt for Martin, while Leeds chose to stick with Farke.

Ancelotti instead went to Brazilian club Botafogo, where he has enjoyed a largely positive stint, despite doubts surrounding his experience.

Ancelotti led his side to the Copa Libertadores, where they were eliminated at the round of 16 stage by Ecuadorian team LDU Quito.

Botafogo have faced plenty of issues off of the pitch this season, with owner John Textor cutting an unpopular figure in Rio de Janeiro.

Textor reportedly wanted to send two Botafogo youngsters to Derby County in an attempt to boost his chances of buying the Rams, with the rumours receiving huge criticism in Brazil.

And the American businessman has been engulfed in controversy relating to a legal dispute between his ownership group and the club’s social association.

Botafogo announced on Wednesday that Ancelotti would be departing from his role as head coach, with the Italian deciding against signing a new contract.

Leeds United could return for Ancelotti

Farke has fought off any immediate questions surrounding the security of his job at Leeds.

The Whites secured a huge victory over Chelsea at Elland Road at the start of the month, before earning hard-fought points against Liverpool and Brentford.

But with a head coach, who is clearly a favourite of the 49ers (who own Leeds and Rangers), back on the market, decision-makers may be persuaded to pile the pressure back on Farke.

Ancelotti represents the untested and the unknown, but the coach does bring an unmatched educational pedigree, having worked under his father.

In Leeds’ situation, however, there is a feeling that substance may have to be favoured over style.
