Leeds backed to sign proven Premier League star to rival Rodrigo in January – pundit

Alex McLeish has claimed the signing of Ross Barkley could be the “spark” needed to ignite Leeds United in January.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland boss claimed the 27-year-old could rival Rodrigo for a place in Marcelo Bielsa’s starting XI.

As reported by 90 Min (18th October), Leeds, Burnley and Newcastle all want to sign Barkley to bolster their midfield during the winter window.

The attacking midfielder spent a month on loan at Leeds between January and February 2013.

Barkley is firmly out of favour at Chelsea, with just three substitute appearances under his belt this season.

His contract at Stamford Bridge runs until 2023 but Thomas Tuchel is reportedly willing to let him leave.

McLeish insisted Barkley has the quality to make an immediate impact at Leeds.

He suggested the England international’s experience would make him a good rival for Rodrigo in the number 10 role.

Asked if he thought Barkley would be a good signing for Leeds, McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “He’s got the quality. There’s no doubt about it.

“He has the quality and is a good name to pluck out of who’s available.

“Rodrigo is a good player, there’s no doubt. You just don’t bring players to Leeds if they’re not of that level.

“But Barkley’s got the experience and also the confidence to help other players in the team. He’s never really made himself a permanent fixture.

“Could he do that at Leeds? They certainly could be doing with a wee spark.”

Barkley spent last season on loan at Aston Villa but struggled for form in the Midlands.

He scored three goals and contributed one assist, all which came in his opening 10 games, in 24 appearances for the Villans.
