Done deal: Leeds boost as first-team star signs new long-term deal

By Harry Sykes

Leeds defender Gaetano Berardi has signed a new three-year deal with the club.

The 28-year-old joined from Sampdoria in 2014 for a fee of just £90,000 and has become a fan favourite at Elland Road.

Now he has committed his future to the club until at least 2020.

The news was released on the official Leeds Twitter account on Tuesday afternoon.

Berardi has made 83 appearances for Leeds, including 26 games in the Championship last season.

He lined up at left back in the opening Championship game of the season, which Leeds won 3-2 to make a great start to the new season.

However, Berardi was injured in the 38th minute and was replaced by Vurnon Anita.

It is believed that he suffered a dislocated shoulder, although the full extent of the injury is not known yet.

Leeds have signed Cameron Borthwick-Jackson on loan and he is a natural to slot in at the left-back position for Berardi.

The new deal should sweeten the blow of his injury and Leeds fans will be made up as another player commits to manager Thomas Christiansen in a long-term deal.

However, as Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Phil Hay pointed out, there are a number of other senior stars who are out of contract in 2018.

In other Leeds news, the Whites have suffered a blow as 26-year-old agrees terms with a Premier League outfit.
