Leeds defender takes to Twitter to explain squad omission v Wigan

By Dominic Toner

Leeds defender Liam Cooper has revealed that he was unavailable against Wigan after picking up an injury in training.

The 25-year-old missed the final day of the Championship season as the Whites drew 1-1 away to Wigan, with striker Chris Wood scoring his 30th goal of the campaign.

Cooper’s omission left Garry Monk short of centre-back options, with Pontus Jansson also missing through suspension.

However, versatile defender Luke Ayling moved into the centre and Lewie Coyle got a rare start at right-back.

Cooper was available to return for Leeds following his six-match ban for stamping on Reading defender Reece Oxford on 1 April.

The defender explained after the draw with Wigan that he missed the clash because he rolled his ankle in training.

“Yes mate! Rolled my ankle in training.. Gutted,” Cooper wrote on his personal Twitter account.

Cooper has played a bit-part role for Leeds during the season and made just 18 appearances across all competitions.

The Scotsman has found himself behind centre-back pairing Jansson and Kyle Bartley in the pecking order, but the latter is now set to return to Swansea following his successful season-long loan.

He will hope for more opportunities in the first team next season as the club try to build on their form this year.

Leeds finished the campaign seventh in the Championship table and ended up just five points adrift of the play-off spots, despite being in the promotion mix for the majority of the season.
