Leeds United made more from commercial deals than any other Championship side in the 2016/17 financial year, according to official figures.
Swiss Ramble, the respected football finance blogger, released figures that showed they surpassed even relegated clubs Newcastle, Aston Villa and Norwich, which is hugely impressive.
Leeds came out on top of the Championship with £16million from commercial and sponsorship agreements, ahead of Newcastle (£15million), Norwich (£15million), and Aston Villa Villa (£13million).
Newcastle were said to be hampered by their ‘ubiquitous’ Sports Direct deal from owner Mike Ashley.
The figures were released on the Swiss Ramble Twitter page on Thursday morning:
#NUFC commercial income almost halved from £28m to £15m, including central PL sponsors. Comprises commercial £12.1m & other income £2.7m. Only surpassed by Leeds £16m & Norwich £15m. Ubiquitous presence of Sports Direct advertising surely puts off other potential partners pic.twitter.com/Hke3XTNiS6

This is impressive from Leeds, although the work from this financial year was down to Massimo Cellino. It shows, however, that Leeds can punch above their weight for the Championship, and could thrive in the Premier League. Fans want to see this type of news reflected in the summer transfer window, although with different owners it’s not quite so straightforward. Leeds fans will just be pleased to see their side on top of a Championship table for once.
