Leeds employee issues 'great' Edmondson claim after deal agreed

Noel Whelan has backed Leeds United striker Ryan Edmondson to bounce back from his disappointing Fleetwood loan at Port Vale.

The former Leeds hitman and club ambassador, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted things did not go to plan for the 20-year-old at the League One outfit.

Edmondson was recalled by Leeds from Fleetwood on Tuesday of last week (4 January) and immediately joined Port Vale for the rest of the season.

The young forward struggled for form with the Cod Army.

Whelan insisted Edmondson needs to take his chance at Port Vale after breaking through Leeds’ under-23s.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Ryan was allowed to go out on loan when the under-23s was becoming too easy.

“When it comes to scoring goals, you need that progression. He goes out on loan to Fleetwood but he didn’t get the minutes for whatever reason.

“Now this young man has the opportunity to forge something better than what he had with Fleetwood.

“He’s been given this opportunity of minutes. It’ll guarantee minutes for Ryan Edmondson, but he has to take this with open arms. Take this opportunity, take this chance because Port Vale are doing quite well.

“You’re not going into a poor side. You’re going into a side that’s full of confidence who have got something to fight for.

“As a player and a manager, the manager can only do so much, which is put the trust in the player. Now it’s down to the player to repay that faith in the manager bringing him in and giving him this great opportunity.

“Fingers crossed it works out for him. He’s got to take it with two hands.

“It’s a different style of football, it’s a little bit more aggressive, it’s a little bit more direct. You can add more strings to your bow.

“If you can pull this one off and you can do very well then it says to me you’d probably do better at League One and Championship level.”

Edmondson scored twice in 17 appearances for Fleetwood.

He has also spent time on loan at Aberdeen and Northampton Town in recent seasons.
