Leeds shock move for £8.5m Spanish forward on the cards - transfer expert

By Alex Stevens

Alfonso Pedraza could make an unexpected return to Leeds United next season, according to a transfer expert.

Yorkshire Evening Post correspondent Phil Hay made the shock claim on Twitter after the club announced their retained players list on Wednesday.

As expected, Leeds announced that winger Pedraza has returned to his parent club Villarreal following the expiry of his loan deal that began in the January window.

But Hay, who is renowned for his Leeds contacts and record of providing reliable transfer information about the club, says it might not be the last the Elland Road faithful have seen of the Spanish wide forward.

Asked by a Leeds fan about the possibility of the club signing Pedraza again, Hay responded on his personal Twitter account that “it’s possible” although it depends on what Villarreal have planned for him.

Hay ruled out the possibility of Leeds signing Pedraza permanently as “too expensive” and stressed that it “could only be another loan”.

The Championship club had an agreement with Villarreal that they would have forked out £8.5million to sign the left winger permanently this summer had they achieved their aim of promotion to the Premier League.

A second play for Pedraza would be regarded as a shock given his indifferent loan spell, in which he failed to live up to his reputation in Spain.

The two-times Spain Under-21 international scored just a single goal in 14 league games, eight of which he started, since joining on the final day of the January transfer window.

Football Insider verdict:

There are no two ways about it. Pedraza was a big disappointment at Leeds. With his pace, sure footwork and technical ability, he promised so much. But a single goal and no assists from 735 minutes of Championship action tells an emphatic tale of a player who could not translate his exquisite form of the Spanish second tier into its English counterpart. Leeds agreed the Pedraza deal in January on the never-never. Well done to them. It is hard to see how the Spaniard will ever be a force in the English league.
