'Stupid', 'Just not true, is it?' - Leeds fans rage at Heckingbottom after his attacker claim

By Richard Parks

Leeds United fans have ripped into Paul Heckingbottom on Twitter after he suggested there is “competition” blocking Jack Clarke’s path to the first team.

Leeds fans have been clamouring on Twitter for the forward, 17, to be given his chance in the senior side after a string of impressive displays for the Under-23s.

Clarke, 17, tormented the Cardiff City defence in a development side match at Thorp Arch last Friday and created both of Leeds’ first two goals in their 3-0 triumph, which was their fourth consecutive win.

His form has been impressive throughout the campaign after he made the step up from the Under-18s appear to be an easy one.

Talking at the pre-match press conference ahead of the clash with Bolton on Easter Friday, Heckingbottom admitted that the wonderkid could get his chance soon but warned that others are ahead of him in the pecking order.

“He [Clarke] is possibly the next one in,” said Heckingbottom as quoted by Leeds Live, “but he’s got a lot of competition in front of him.

“Done well for a long time though. Been performing well. The club needs to manage him properly and there will come a time when he’s dipped into it.”

A section of United fans questioned Heckingbottom’s judgement as they pointed out that the senior attacking players have been hopeless over the last few months.

Leeds have slipped to 14th in the table to leave their play-offs hopes in tatters following a dreadful run since the turn of the year, and many blame for the forwards who they cannot believe deserve regular selection ahead of the exciting Clarke.
