'Absolute baller', 'Better than Chris Wood' – Leeds fans react to 24-year-old display v Newport

By Harry Sykes

It was Kemar Roofe’s turn to lead the Leeds line on Tuesday evening in the Carabao Cup game against Newport County.

And he carried on the club’s cup hat-trick heroics, after Samuel Saiz fired them through to Round 2 with a hat-trick against Port Vale last week.

After Newport opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, Roofe brought the match level just before half time, scoring from close range after a corner kick.

His second came just after the restart when a ball from Stuart Dallas rebounded to him to volley home.

He almost secured the match ball in the 63rd minute with a brilliant long-range chip, but the bar came to Newport’s rescue.

There was no denying him though and two minutes later he completed his hat-trick in style, with an overhead kick.

It was an incredible return considering he’d only scored three goals in 53 appearances across all competitions for Leeds prior to tonight’s game.

And Leeds fans were delighted with his goal-scoring heroics – especially as they’re looking for attackers to step up in the wake of leading scorer from last season Chris Wood leaving for Burnley.

He was given a standing ovation when he left the pitch in the 75th minute, but the scoring hadn’t stopped there, with Samu Saiz and Ronaldo Vieira making it a top night for the Elland Road crowd.

Now they have two hat-trick heroes in the Carabao Cup and they took to Twitter to heap praise on Roofe after the 5-1 victory.

Here is a selection of their reactions on Twitter:
